We’re well into the hottest part of the year now. For our canine companions, summer’s scorching-hot weather can be both a blessing and a curse. On the one paw, Fido gets to run and play outdoors, roll around in the grass, and enjoy lots of long walks. However, the heat can be both uncomfortable and dangerous to him. After all, he does have a fur coat on! A Chesapeake, VA vet offers some advice on helping your pup cope with the heat in this article.
Water
First and foremost, make sure Fido always has water. If you have a yard, keep water outside for him as well. (Tip: put it in a plant urn to make it look nice.) You can drop an ice cube into your canine buddy’s bowl on hot days.
Grooming
All of our furry pals have their own specific grooming needs. Some pups will be cooler with a cute summer trim, while others just need extra brushing. Keep up with Fido’s beauty care needs!
Schedule
You may need to adjust Fido’s daily doggy schedule in hot weather. Try to walk and play with your four-legged friend in the mornings and evenings, when it’s a little cooler out.
Paw Care
Your furry best friend can get painful paw burns from running or walking on hot or harsh surfaces. Try to keep Fido on soft ground as much as you can. Paw balm or wax can also be helpful here. Headed to the beach? Keep an eye out for sharp rocks or shells.
Cooling Products
Does your dog really struggle with hot weather? Fido may appreciate a cooling vest. As the name suggests, these help keep your pooch cool in that sweltering summer heat. Cooling pads are also quite popular with our canine companions.
Treats
Fido likes a cool treat as much as we do. You can find doggy ice cream in stores, but you can also make your own. Just stick with safe ingredients.
Tail Wags
The time we have to spend with our furry companions often goes by much too quickly. Enjoy some quiet time with Fido. Soak up a sunset, or visit a pretty park or beach with him.
