Senior Pet Month

November is a very special month for us: it’s Senior Pet Month! While we love animals of all ages, dogs and cats in their golden years just really have a sweet, special demeanor that is truly precious. Read on as a Chesapeake, VA vet lists some reasons to celebrate senior pets.

They’re Calm

Puppies and kittens are adorable, but they are also very energetic and mischievous. You don’t have to worry about an older dog chewing your shoes. Fido won’t need long walks or hours of playtime, either. For the most part, he’ll be perfectly content sleeping at your feet.

They’re Cute

Dogs and cats in their golden years are absolutely adorable in their own way. An older pooch sleeping in the sun is always a heartwarming sight. As for Fluffy, she’s often just a furry, sleepy bundle of purrs and cuddles at this point in her life.

They’re Loyal

It’s always really sad seeing older pets in shelters, as they are often so scared, sad, and confused. Sometimes their owners have had to move into assisted living facilities, and couldn’t bring them. In other cases, illness or financial problems force people to turn their pets in. Unfortunately, there are also cases where people just give older pets away, often after years of love and loyalty. No matter what the reason was, Fluffy and Fido tend to be very, very devoted to their rescuers. You may be surprised at how quickly that old dog or cat can just melt your heart!

They’re Gentle

Older pets often make great family pets, because they’re just so calm and gentle. Fido and Fluffy also tend to get along well with other pets, though this of course will depend on the other pet as well.

Prior Experience

Another great thing about older pets? They already know the do’s and don’ts of being a pet. Fido should likely know at least a few basic commands. As for Fluffy, well, she’ll be an expert at crucial kitty skills such as napping, teleportation, and meditating.

No Surprises

With baby animals, you really can’t tell exactly what they’ll look or act like as adults, and you won’t know until they’re grown. There are no surprises with older pets. What you see is what you get!
