Caring for Fido’s Furry Feet

As you’ve probably noticed, the pawprint has become Fido’s unofficial sigil. There’s a good reason for this! Our canine pals certainly do leave footprints on our hearts … as well as on our floors. Taking care of your pet’s feet isn’t something that needs to take up a lot of time, but it is very important. A Chesapeake, VA vet offers some tips on this below.

Claw Trims

Overgrown nails can cause a lot more issues than one may think. They’re quite uncomfortable for your pup to walk on, and can make it hard for him to gain good traction. Plus, they sometimes snag and rip on things. Keeping Fido’s nails trimmed is very important! You do need to be careful here, though. If you cut too far, you could cut the quick. This is quite painful for dogs, and can cause bleeding or even infections. Ask your vet to demonstrate proper techniques. If you aren’t comfortable giving your canine buddy a pawdicure, contact us to schedule one.

Toe Fur

Does your canine companion have toe fur tufts? These are cute, but you may want to clip them. They can sometimes collect gunk like gum or ice, which can result in painful mats.

Paw Pads

Dogs’ paw pads act like shock absorbers, helping cushion their bones from all those jumps and happy dances. They’re also very sensitive, and act as temperature gauges. To protect Fido’s ‘toe beans,’ keep him off hot or harsh surface. Also, steer your pup around things like sharp rocks and broken glass when walking him. You can use paw balm to protect and moisturize Fido’s feet. This is especially important in hot or cold weather.

Warning Signs

Get into the habit of checking your dog’s paws regularly. You’ll be looking for foreign objects, like ticks, as well as signs of injury. Contact your vet if you notice Fido constantly licking or biting his paws. This can be a sign of pain.

Hacks

Does Fido hate having his feet touched? Start teaching your pooch to Shake Paw. Give him a treat when he gives you his foot. Opt for something extra yummy, like bacon or even steak. Chances are, your furry buddy will soon have a remarkable change of opinion on the matter!
