4 Ways to Keep a Senior Cat Comfortable

As your cat ages, you’ll want to make some minor adjustments to her care regimen. Proper veterinary care is a must, of course, but good home care is equally important. As always, your feline pal will need good food, fresh water, and a clean litterbox. However, small touches can help keep your kitty more comfortable, which is very important for cats in their golden years. Read on as a North Suffolk, VA vet offers advice on keeping a senior cat comfy and purring.

Comfy Sleeping Spots

Cats are rather drowsy in general, but senior kitties are particularly tired. Fluffy may sleep up to 20 hours a day! Make sure your home has lots of comfy nooks and crannies for your kitty to snuggle up in. Store-bought beds are fine, and needn’t be expensive. You can also fold soft blankets up and put them in boxes or wicker baskets, or even just on your couch or a chair you don’t use much. Wash your pet’s bedding frequently, and rearrange things now and then so your furry companion can keep finding new spots. You may also want to set out some pet ramps or footstools, so your pet can reach her favorite spots more easily.

Night Light

Senior cats sometimes experience a loss in their vision or hearing. Fluffy may not be able to see as well as she once did, which can make it hard for her to find her way around after dark. Keep a nightlight on for your feline buddy after bedtime.

Grooming

As Fluffy ages, she may get stiff and sore. This will make it harder for her to groom her whole body. Your kitty’s fur may get matted or greasy, which isn’t very comfortable for her. Help your furry friend out by gently brushing her.

TLC

At the end of the day, the best thing you can do for your furry friend is to just make sure she feels loved. Small touches, like talking to your kitty, petting her, and playing with her, will help keep that little motor going. Be very gentle whenever you pick your feline friend up. When you put her down, set her down on the floor gently.
