Autumn Pet Dangers

October 1 2021
It’s officially fall! The chilly nights and changing foliage have arrived, and the stores are full of pumpkins and other seasonal items. Many of our furry patients get a bit frisky at this time of year, which is of course adorable. However, fall can be dangerous for our four-legged friends. You’ll want to keep a close eye out for potential hazards. A Chesapeake, VA veterinarian lists some key ones below.

Weather

Temperatures can drop quickly at this time of year. If you have a kitty, keep your feline pal safe and sound inside. With smaller pets, you’ll need to make sure that their habitats are at the correct temperature. Dogs with thin fur may need jackets or sweaters on chilly days. Your four-legged friend will also appreciate having a warm, comfy bed to snuggle up in.

Wild Animals

At this time of year, many wild animals are looking for places to hunker down, and may be more aggressive than usual. Keep an eye out for snakes and other hazards as you’re walking your dog.

Stiffness/Soreness

Older dogs and cats may get quite achy when it’s really cold out. Pets with arthritis and other bone/joint issues might have a hard time moving around.. Things like medication, supplements, massage, and thermal beds can all help keep your furry bff comfortable. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Darkness

The shorter days mean you’ll be walking Fido after dark quite a bit. Bring a flashlight along, and get good reflective gear for both yourself and your pooch. You’ll also want to wear boots or shoes with good traction.

Toxins

In fall, many people put antifreeze in their cars, which results in toxic puddles. Antifreeze is extremely poisonous to pets, but unfortunately has a taste that many of them like. This is also a popular time of year for people to set out rodenticides and apply fertilizers to their lawns. These things can all make your furry buddy very sick!

Halloween

Halloween brings its own set of dangers. Traffic is one concern. Take extra care when walking Fido! Also, keep your animal companion in mind as you’re hanging decorations. Candles, items with ropes or cords, plastic films and wraps, and anything small or sharp are all potential hazards for pets. Do you have questions or concerns about your pet’s health or care?
