Cute Ways to Spoil a Guinea Pig

February 1 2021
Do you have a Guinea pig for a pet? If so, you have a pretty adorable little buddy! These guys are beloved children’s pets, but they’re also becoming popular with adults, and with good reason. They’re small, quiet, and inexpensive, which makes them great options for apartment dwellers. Just like any other pet, these adorable furballs need good food, a comfy habitat, and regular veterinary care to thrive. But what does it take to spoil a Guinea pig? A Chesapeake, VA vet lists some options below.

Great Cage

You’ll find lots of cages made for Guinea pigs, but many of them are really too small. Bigger is definitely better: your furballs need at least 10 square feet of space. If you don’t have a lot of floor space, get one with multiple levels. Ask your vet for specific advice, including placement, substrate, and accessories.

Cozies

If you’ve never heard of a cozy, it’s basically a tiny tent/sleeping bag for little animals. You can buy them, but you can also make your own.

Beds

Who says small animals don’t need comfy beds? Just get something that was made specifically for smaller pets.

Beauty Sessions

Just like larger animals, Guinea pigs need some help with their beauty regimes. You’ll need to brush your tiny furball regularly. The type of brush or comb you should use will depend on what sort of cavy you have, so ask your vet for recommendations.

Buddies

Guinea pigs are extremely sociable and friendly, and they really don’t do well living alone. In fact, in Switzerland, it’s illegal to only have one, as it’s considered abusive. (Fun fact: Switzerland also allows Guinea pig rental services for those who are grieving or need extra cheer.) We recommend keeping at least two. Just be sure to keep same-sex pigs together, as otherwise, they’ll breed.

Cuddles

One thing that sets Guinea pigs apart from many other smaller pets is the fact that they are so cuddly. In fact, many of them like to sleep on their humans’ laps. In order to keep your pet gentle and friendly, you’ll need to pay attention to him daily. Talk to him, pet him, and play with him, and just generally try to make him feel loved.
